Be in the picture.

You are the one holding the camera at every birthday, every first day of school, every trip to the lake. Twenty years from now your children will want a photograph with you in it — not behind it. That is what this studio is for.

Before you talk yourself out of it

The four things everyone says to me first.

None of them has ever been the reason a session went badly.

I hate photos of myself.

Almost everyone says this, and almost everyone changes their mind when they see themselves laughing instead of posing. I will never ask you to hold a pose you would not hold in real life, and I will never point a camera at you from below. If a photograph does not look like you, it does not go in the gallery.

My toddler will not cooperate.

Good. A three-year-old running away from you is a real photograph; a three-year-old sitting still is a school portrait. I plan for the meltdown — it usually arrives around minute twenty, we stop, we get a snack, and the best frames come in the ten minutes after.

We have nothing to wear.

You do. Two or three colours that sit near each other, no logos, no tight stripes. I send a short guide with photographs of real families once your date is held — and if you ignore it and wear what you actually own, the pictures look more like you, not less.

We are not a photogenic couple.

Nobody is, standing still and being told to look natural. So we do not do that. We walk, you talk to each other, I stay out of the way — and the frames that end up on your wall are the ones where you forgot I was there.

RommelFolsom

Hello

I started this because I was missing from my own family album.

I am Rommel. I have a son, and for years the only photographs of the two of us together were blurry selfies taken at arm’s length. I learned to photograph families because I wanted better than that for mine, and it turned out I wanted it for everyone else’s too.

So I work slowly. I arrive early and find where the light will land in forty minutes. I let the kids be exactly as loud as they are. And I always make sure there are photographs with you in them — not just the ones you took.

Come as you are. I will do the rest.

Practical things

The questions I get every week.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks for families, portraits and engagements. Events need a little more so we can plan the run sheet. Mini sessions go in a few days — there are only eight slots and the same families come back every year.

What if my child is having a bad day?

Then we photograph the day you are actually having. If it genuinely falls apart — fever, no sleep, a toddler who will not leave the car — we stop and reschedule at no cost. That has happened, and it was fine.

What happens if it rains, or the smoke rolls in?

We move it, free, no discussion. Northern California summers mean air-quality calls too — if the AQI is over 150 I message you that morning and we take the next open slot.

Can I reschedule? Is the deposit refundable?

Free reschedule once, up to 72 hours before. Inside 72 hours the deposit follows you to the new date but is not refunded, because that time is usually too late to fill.

Do you travel outside Folsom?

Thirty miles is included, which covers El Dorado Hills, Roseville, Granite Bay and most of Sacramento. Beyond that it is $0.70 a mile round trip.

Who owns the photographs, and can I print them?

You get a print release with every gallery — print them, frame them, send them to grandparents. I keep the copyright and the right to show a few here and on Instagram. Tell me you would rather I did not, and I will not. That includes never posting your children if you ask.

Do you shoot weddings?

No — engagements yes, the wedding day no. A wedding needs someone who does nothing but weddings. Ask and I will happily send you names.
